Based on historical records, English playwright Peter Whelan brings to life the tale of Susanna Hall, William Shakespeare’s eldest daughter.
It is Jacobean England, 1613. The reign of King James I is marked by political and religious turbulence. General unease, uncertainty, and unrest permeate every corner of the realm. Suspicions are rife, tensions are high.
In the small Warwickshire town of Stratford-upon-Avon, where the notorious Gunpowder Plot to assassinate James was allegedly hatched, and home to Shakespeare and his family, a tale of forbidden love, accusation, disease, desperation and desire unravels.
In a world filled with whispers and suspicion, where reputation is everything, these people will learn that the lines between right and wrong, truth and lies are blurred.
With a brilliantly sparse and suggestive design concept by recent NIDA graduates Renee Mulder, Matthew Tunchon and Joshua Emanuel, and original music by WAPPA graduate Brent Hill, a talented ensemble of seven performers led by director Sarah Giles (NIDA 2008) bring this moving tale to life, in a starkly bold and raw theatrical production not to be missed.
